THE TORTOISE AND THE
HAIR by Steve Israel

*In a long term job related injury, commonly known as tennis elbow,
Steve had surgery on both arms in October of 1998. He is back to
work doing carpentry, but is still having pain in the elbows. Looks
like it’s time for a change in jobs.
Steve is actively involved in running and bicycling, that doesn’t
seem to bother his arms. He is currently the president of his running
club, and participates in running races and triathlons.
*Dee is retired from the Washington State Department of Transportation.
She is writing a book on her family history. She does not run with
Steve, but stays fit by walking.
When Dee was in high school, she was playing volley ball and
fell on her knee. Since that time, she has had trouble with that
knee on occasions. In June of 1999, Dee had knee surgery to have
bone fragments removed from her shattered knee cap. (Bette
late than never.) Orthoscopic surgery is so much more non-invasive
than the old way of doing surgery. Three days later, she was out
walking with her TOPS group and walked one mile.
*Shane is 21 years old, and has a son of his own, Nile. Shane
lives in the Seattle area, has been working in a printing shop for about
three years. He enjoys mountain bike riding, and is planning to ride
his bike from Seattle to Portland in July of t
s year. Shane does not run with Steve ether.
*Shiloh is 23 years old, and is an avid skate board rider. Shiloh
is working in sales, and also lives in the Seattle area. Shiloh enjoys
bicycling with his brother, but will only run with his dad when hell freezes
over.
